Edison Arevalo presents What Lies Beneath

Picture
Picture
Fascinated by illustrations from old encyclopedias, lithographs of Animalia, and especially botanicals, Edison Arevalo gathered wild plants and flowers, making illustrations. His attention was drawn to the root systems, some tangled and messy, others simple, which we never see or appreciate in any plant. That is how the series got the name "What Lies Beneath" Aravelo shot over 100 plates for this work, primarily Ambrotypes "glass plates" and some tintypes "metal plates."

Born in Cuenca Ecuador, and moved to the US at age 20, Edison Arevalo was fascinated by analog photography. He started with 35mm, moved to medium format; & ultimately started working with large format cameras. Digital photography was replacing traditional photography. Some favorite films and photo papers were no longer being made, and he looked into 19th-century photographic processes and making photographic film. Aravelo found images made with the wet plate collodion technique, which instantly caught his attention. It took years to read, learn and understand the collodion process and to build the necessary equipment and chemicals to work with this process.

Colleen Hains of Silvermine, Connecticut comes to SATC

Enjoy the work of local Silvermine, Connecticut artist Colleen Hains, who takes us on scenic adventures of barn scenes in Vermont and the Seashore in Rowayton, Connecticut  to her own version of ‘The Birds’, like Alfred Hitchcock frightened us with.

Colleen is an oil painter whose primary focus is to draw emotion from the viewer.  As she paints, her emotions are embedded in the canvas with her paints.  Whether animal paintings of dogs, cats or horses, she hopes the viewer will feel the kindness and love of the animal.

Colleen studied under Rayma Spaulding, a Hudson River Valley Painter. Colleen currently chairs the Silvermine Artists in Residence Organization.  She is the owner of Art Masters of Silvermine, an effort to bring art into everyone’s world. She enjoys teaching Alzheimer/dementia seniors watercolor.

PEOPLE AND PLACES ART EXHIBIT

Art Exhibit of works by Carol Gaulin-Mckenzie and Roberta Shea
The Cultural Arts Coalition and Studio Around the Corner present  a visually stunning exhibition of works by Newtown, Ct. artists Carol Gaulin-McKenzie and Roberta Shea.
Carol creates life-size realistic portraits. Her technique involves the use of various materials including papers, fabrics, chalks, paints, etc. to build a Japanese-like flat  vs. modeled mixed media surface that begins with a photograph and ends with a feeling.
Roberta paints real and imagined landscapes filled with light, air, color, atmosphere, and mystery.  With her loose, bold, brushstroke and color combinations she seamlessly moves from realistic to the abstract. Her sense of place is expressed in oil paint as she invites viewers to be part of her creative process.
