Restoration of Old Town Hall and Theater
The Southeast Old Town Hall (OTH), designed by Child and DeGoll Architects in the Colonial Revival style, was erected in 1896 and served the community over the century as government center and courthouse, community gathering place, theater, movie house, ballroom, teen canteen, museum and cultural arts center. A central focal point in Brewster Village, iconic in structure, and an integral part of the history of the area, OTH was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. As noted in the National Register application, OTH “testifies to the Victorian opulence of the Village of Brewster.” The rectangular 3-story brick building, with a footprint of almost 4000 square feet, was built to be fireproof with masonry walls, massive beams, cast iron pillars and a slate roof. The front facade had an elaborate central staircase, highlighted on top with a large ornate fanlight and eclectic Moorish-style dormers. The building truly holds architectural and historic significance.
OTH is the “Jewel in the Crown” of Brewster’s Main Street, and a keystone in the revitalization of the Village of Brewster. The Cultural Arts Coalition, in cooperation with the Town of Southeast, is spearheading the restoration and the reopening of the theater. Once the OTH theater is again operable, it will serve as an ideal venue for plays, concerts, films, and other community events, as well as a catalyst for economic development.
The overall restoration project is estimated to cost between $3.0M and $4.3M, and funding is potentially available from a variety of sources including Federal, State, and local grants, our revenue-raising activities at the Studio Around the Corner, the Brewster Music Series, individuals/groups/business donations, and targeted fundraising efforts.
